It has been a long long time that I haven’t implemented any Flash vs Silverlight comparison. Today, I would like to introduce you the Blur Animation Effect!
The effect is simple, the star icon in the application will follow your mouse position. While star icon is moving, the residue image will fade out steadily. Traditionally, this kind of effect is done by creating a lot of instances with different opacity. The consequence of this method is that it will consume you a lot of computer resources and hence limiting the level of effect.
However, by using the Bitmap library (WriteableBitmap in Silverlight, BitmapData in Flash), calculations can be made within a single bitmap object and rendering is done using bitwise computation. This greatly enhanced the performance of effect and the ease of programming.
Many particles engine effect are making use of this approach.
Can you think of any other effect which can apply this kind of approach?

The Silverlight version is extremely slow on my Sony Viao 21.GHZ machine (windows / google chrome)
Both versions show the same poor behaviour in Internet Explorer and virtually freeze the browser.

Runs fine in IE8 on Windows 7.
The Silverlight version has a cleaner look. You can see more details and it tends to fade longer.

IMO Particles give a better visual effect, but the blur effect is an interesting technique.
On my computer (Vista, dual core) IE is eating near 95% of my two cores when I’m playing with the flash and SL demo… Not sure managing particles is not far better (I wrote a snow effect being able to manage up to 2000 particles without any problem on the same computer) !
The flash version is stopping sometimes, the SL one seems to be more robust.

I have applied a blur effect on the whole screen, that might be a serious cause of the slow problem.
I will try to modify the code a bit and boost the performance.

Excellent example. Both versions work well the same for me :) Perhaps you could either lengthen the fade-out time for the Flash version or shorten the fade-out time for the Silverlight version so they are more similar.

both are smoother, silverlight takes more time to fade than flash.

dVyper and chaitr: I have set the FPS to 30 and the Mask opacity to 2%. However, it turns out that Flash will fade out much faster. Perhaps, the actual FPS for Flash is higher.

This seems to run smoother now, IE only takes about 10 % of processors.
If you modified something, this has a big effect !

Move the mouse at a good speed in both versions. You’ll notice the Flash version sticks to the cursor much better and the Silverlight version has noticable distance between the cursor and last drawn star. As a result the Flash version feels a lot more responsive.

I note interesting effect. If I move mouse over both frames, scroll down to hide frames out of screen and after some time scroll back, then I see only one star on Flash frame and many stars on the SL frame that continue disappear from the same state like before scrolling
