Silverlight 3 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 SP 1
New Features in Silverlight 3
I have spent a while today to analysis what is new in this release. On addition to Silverlight 3 beta, here are some of my findings that you might find useful:
- Multi Touch - Provides an application-level service that processes multitouch input from the operating system
This seems to be an fantastic feature which obviously can provide another level of user experience. However, I don’ t have a multitouch computer to test on this feature. Anyone willing to sponsor me one?
You may visit this SharpGIS to see how Multi-touch can be implemented.
- Analytics - Exposes read-only data about how an application is performing.
This is a very good reporting feature that enables you to check over the computer CPU usage (Analytics.AverageProcessorLoad), as well as the Silverlight CPU usage (Analytics.AverageProcessLoad). You are able to collect GPU device information as well.
- Matrix3DProjection
Other than PlaneProjection, you are now able to use Matrix to manipulate the Perspective 3D of an object. However, I am not good in matrix and couldn’t figure out how to use it.
- Mouse Wheel
Finally we have mouse wheel support without using JavaScript Hack.
- Visual Studio Designer Disappeared?
In this release, you may find that the Designer in the Visual Studio seems to be disappeared. Actually, it’s not. Point your mouse below the scroll bar of the XAML editor carefully, then you are able to drag it up to split the view.
Quick Testing
I have created a quick sample demonstrating those new features. Here you are!

This Server was being hacked
I found that someone sign in into Linux server and used crontab to continue to execute a command file. Inside one of the .sh file, I found the following words “Enjoy FloodBot based on OverKill”. Does anyone has any idea what he is doing? I have downloaded all of the script files. If you want to take a look. Please let me know.

No VS Designer? erk.
Although it was a bit rubbish anyway. I enjoy writing in XML ;-)
The big one for me is fonts, Tim Heuer mentioned that ClearType rendering would appear in SL 3 RTW:

I haven’t got time to play with SL3 now, but would be interested to know if anyone can confirm this?
Thanks, Colin E.

GroupDescriptions property at DataGrid also seems to have disappeared.
Has it been changed of name, moved or completely removed?

Is there a definitive webpage that lists the updates/improvements in SL3 rtw from SL2.x?

hi fmatheis:
GroupDescriptions can be used in code only
you should see the doc of the sdk

Wow, no VS designer. That’s a huge miss for MS. I hated, no despised, Blend 2 as I always code XAML/HTML/XHTML by hand and Blend (at least the way I was using it) always injects all this unwanted in-line style markup that I have to go clean up afterwards which takes more time than if I had just coded it by hand in the first place. Reminds me of trying to code HTML with FrontPage.
I hope MS can release an update to give us the VS designer back because while I code XAML by hand I do actually need to see what the resulting UI looks like without having to run it in debug mode every 3-4 lines of code. Now I guess I get to swivel-chair between VS and Blend. Hope the new blend has better (any) Intellisense in the code view. Blend 2 was just useless for that.

Designer is there for me, but you have to go to the bottom of the XAML page and drag it up to split the view

The ClearType works quite bad. The text is crisp, but there are some unequally dark areas.

John, Oh yeah! I found it. Thanks a lot. I will update my blog content.

Hi
Your web site is excellent.
Just wanted to note - I am getting an Initialise Error in all your last 6 Silverlight 3 examples (except for the above one), or they are simply not loading. Flash on the other hand works without bugs. Platform: Internet Explorer 7, Silverlight 3, Vista.

Regarding design view … I can see it via the tip above, but according to Tim Heuer: “please note that the design view may not work. It should have been fully disabled rather than hidden and I’m investigating why it wasn’t”.

I thought that the Visual Studio designer should now be editable and interactive? Is it the case for you? Mine is still quite the same as before…
July 12th, 2009 at 3:44 am
Seems that it will be the case with Visual Studio 2010 and not before…

Know your source. Never download from a website unless you know the site is reputable. Perhaps your friend has already used the site, or you can research in forums to see what others are saying about it. Check with Better Business Bureau Online to examine a company’s integrity. Beware of sites that try to redirect you to other links or mask their real Web address. Avoid file-sharing networks if at all possible.
